Walk the Walk Talk the Talk

If you haven’t walked in someone’s shoes it is hard to be empatheic to what they have gone through.  People with disabilities have not been totally mainstreamed into society.  That is still a generation away.  People are still predjudice.  It will take another generation before people with disabilities are truly accepted as a part of society and given equal opportunity.  I have been self employed as much by default as by choice.  It has taken me 27 years of struggling to keep the roof over my head and my bills paid.  All that struggle will come to an end with the New Year–in two weeks.

Because I did not have the same opportunities as my peers I had to make my own opportunities.  That is why I can teach and motivate others so they too can reach their maximum potential and learn to Live Without Limits.  Since another labor day is upon us I would like to add this story:

people with physical and mental disabilities

                                          have been abandoned at birth,

                                                banished from society,

                                              used as court jesters,

drowned and burned during tjhe Inquisition,

                                        gassed in Nazi Germany,

and still continue to be segregated, institutionalized

tortured in the name of behavior management,

                        abused, raped euthanized, and murdered.

Now, for the first time, people with disabilities are taking their rightful

place as fully contributing citizens.  The danger is that we will respond with

remediation and beneviolence rather than equity and respect.  And so, we offer you

                                            A CREDO FOR SUPPORT

Do not see my disability as a the problem,

Recognize the my disability is an attribute.

Do Not see my disability as a deficit,

It is you who see me as deviant and helpless.

Do Not try to fix me because I am not broken,

Support me.  I can made my contribution to society in my way.

Do Not see me as your client.  I am your fellow citizen.

See me as your neighbor.  Remember none of us can be self sufficient.

Do Not try to modify my behavior,

Be still and listen.  What you define as inappropriate

may be my attempt t6o communicate with you in the only way I can.

Do Not try to change me you have no right.

Help me learn what I want to know.

Do Not hide your uncertainty behind “professional” distance.

Be a person who listens, and does not take my

my struggle away from me by trying to make it all better.

Do Not use theoriesv and strategies on me.

Be with me.  and when we struggle

with each other, let that give rise to self-reflection.

Do Not try to control me.  I have my right to my power as a person.

What yoyu call non-compliance or manipulation may

actually be the only way I can exert some control over my life.

Do Not teach me to be obedient, submissive or polite.

I need to feel entitled to say no if I am to protect myself.

Do Not be charitable towards me.

The last thing the world needs is another Jerry Lewis.

Be my ally against those who exploit me.  for their own gratification.

Do Not try to be my friend.  I deserve more than that.

Get to know me.  We may become friends.

Do Not help me, even if it does make you feel good.

Ask me if I need your help.  Let me show you how you can best assist me.

Do Not admire me.  A desire to live a full life does not warrant adoration.

Respect me, for respect presumes equity.

Do Not tell, correct, and lead.

                          Listen, support, and follow.

                                 Do Not work on me.

                                     Work with me.

Since this poem was written a lot of doors have been opened, but we still have a long way to go before there is true equality in the workplace.  I found that since I could not opportunities for gainful employment I would make my own opportunities.  Now that the workplace has changed I can help others learn what I learned the hard way with coaching.

Set a Goal and Work it

It took me 27 years to reach my goal of working a speaker/trainer/coach where I’m being paid for my time.  It was a long road but I always had that focus and visualization.  It may of come along faster but I had no family support.  I had to distance myself from them before I could focus and work my plan.  If it was left up to my family they refuse to see my capabilities, they want to only focus on my disability and see it as a problem.

I had to first reprogram my thinking to become more positive.  Then I had to map out a plan and work it.  Becoming a member of social networks and blogging were an important piece.  Becoming members on group specific to my expertise and reading posts were another  piece of the puzzle.  Taking part of teleseminars and honing in my skills were another piece of te puzzle.  Setting myself up on the internet with a radio show was another piecew of the puzzle.

Should You Be in Business For Yourself

Some people are born to be entrepreneurs and some people work better in an environment where they are being paid a salary for their work and do not have the stress of worrying about being the decision maker or whether or not they have funds to pay their bills.  To factors have an influence on this–your natural behavior patterns and the environment you were raised in.

I have an entrepreneural spirite and work better in an enviroment where no one is over my head watching me. Plus, when I entered the workforce it was 12 years before ADA became law and even though we had the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, sections 503 and 504, companies were able to get around the law unless they received funding from the government.  Therefore, I had no choice but to become self-employed.   Growing a business on limited funds was very difficult when it came to marketing my business.

Today being self-employed is much easier.  With blogging, websites, SEO, teleclasses, affiliate marketing, being in business are factors that increase for success.  These are things you can do on a limited budget and still grow your business, along with the traditional methods of marketing.

Behavioral patterns play a role.  I use the InScape Publishing Profile DiSC Classic 2 plus to coach my clients.  With a High “D” in your natural behavior pattern you lik”e to take control and influence your environment.  You see the total picture but may not always be able to give the deatails.  You are fast paced.  As a high “I” you love to talk to people.  You can meet strangers and make friends easily.  A “S” behavior pattern is very detailed, he likes to go by the rule book and is metodical in the way he goes about the process.  A “C” behavior pattern is someone who needs to be pushed to reach his goal.

These are some issues to consider when being in business for yourself.

LIVE WITHOUT LIMITS

I have cerebral palsy (paraphlegia–right side only).  That means when I walk I tend to drag my right foot because I do not control my foot to go heel to toe as many people walk.  My right hand is drawn up and I do not have control of my fingers to grab anything.  I do not have peripheral vision or depth perception in my right eye.  It also affects how I learn because the information dies not always move easily fron short term memory into long term memory so I often did poorly on tests.  Therefore, I learn differently.

Because I was educated before there were laws on the books gaurenteeing people with disabilities the right to an education I was the only person with a disability in the school, much less. classroom.   Therefore, the teachers did not know how to address my special needs.  My classmates didn’t know how to relate to me as a person and would tease me to cover up their own fears.

I grew up in a dysfunctional family where there was a lot of physical, emotional, and verbal abuse.  This created an environment ripe for low self esteem.  I only overcame these problems after entering college and studying both mental health and psychology.

I have an AAS in Mental Health, BS in Psychology, and credits towards MS in Rehabilitation Counseling.  I continued my education by attending Toastmasters where I achieved both the CTM and ATM certifications.  As a member of NSA-GA Chapter I participated in their mentor program and wrote a speech SUCCESS IS MY ONLY OPTION!  I attended the American Seminar Leaders Association University and received the Certified Seminar Leader (CSL) certification where I learned to write and present a seminar.

Today I have my own company CAREER PERFORMANCE INSTITUTE.  I have written two seminars that I also sell as homestudy programs.  They are CREATE YOUR OWN SUCCESS IN LIFE and START YOUR OWN BUSINESS ON A SHOESTRING BUDGET.    I also publish a newsletter CREATE YOUR OWN SUCCESS IN LIFE.

Since  I was unable to secure a job with a company and build credit or credibility with a bank to secure loans to build my business.  I have had to work other jobs while I build my business to take care of basic needs and then whenever I had extra funds I put it into marketing.   Someday I would like  to set up a foundation that would assist people with disabilities with medntoring and low interest loans for their business.  I am also looking for anyone who could assist me in achieving this endeavor.
